Sylvia Rivera

We‘ve got different banners at the top of our web site which come up randomly. One of the banners features a picture of Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson. It’s this photo:

We want to tell you a bit about Sylvia Rivera (left on the photo). Here’s a quote from the Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SLRP):

A veteran of the 1969 Stonewall uprising, Sylvia was a tireless advocate for all those who have been marginalized as the “gay rights” movement has mainstreamed. Sylvia fought hard against the exclusion of transgender people from the Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act in New York, and was a loud and persistent voice for the rights of people of color and low-income queers and trans people. This project works to continue Sylvia’s work by centralizing issues of systemic poverty and racism, and prioritizing the struggles of queer and trans people who face the most severe and multi-faceted discrimination. (Source: Who was Sylvia Rivera?)

For the following video of a speech held by Sylvia at 1973 Liberation Day Rally we consider it necessary putting a trigger warning here. In her speech, Sylvia talks about prison, experiencing racist and transhating violence and being raped. Please think about whether you‘re fine with dealing with such issues right now.
